Important safety alert: Medline bed recall

Senior living and healthcare providers should be aware of a voluntary recall and market withdrawal announced by Medline involving Medline brand beds and related accessories. In its recall notice, Medline states that the action is intended to address potential fire and resident entrapment hazards associated with certain bed products and accessories. Providers should review the manufacturer's notice and their inventories to determine whether affected products are in service within their organization and follow all recommended actions.

Why this matters

According to information provided by Medline and the FDA, pendant controls and related wiring may overheat, spark, smoke, melt, or catch fire. Both organizations have also identified resident entrapment risks associated with the use of incompatible or non-approved accessories, which may result in serious injury or death.1, 2

Recommended actions

Facilities should review Medline’s Bed Product Recall Notice to determine whether their inventories include affected Medline Brand beds or related pendants, accessories, replacement parts, or bed-containing order packages, and follow Medline’s instructions for affected equipment.

Maintenance, nursing, and safety teams should inspect equipment for signs of damaged wiring, overheating, sparking, smoking, or pendant malfunction and follow all manufacturer instructions regarding continued use, inspection, and corrective actions. Any incidents or adverse events should be reported through established facility and regulatory reporting processes.

Facilities should also review manufacturer communications to determine whether any affected equipment requires replacement, removal from service, inspection, or updated operating procedures.
